Rick Cofer’s contribution to the Texas plastic bag ban

Back in summer 2018, a plastic bag ban was suppressed by a controversial decision by the Texas supreme court. Many people in Texas made a vow to keep on with the plastic bag ban movement. Rick Cofer insisted that people should try and maintain the environment and avoid the use of plastic bags. He encouraged the retail stores to avoid issuing out the plastic bags to their customers for free. Rick Cofer being a member of the board for Austin’s recreation, parks and pease park conservancy he is very familiar with the challenges of littering the environment. Within the period of the plastic bag, ban Cofer worked in the solid waste advisory committee.

The matter of plastic ban in Texas was considered to be complicated. The ban was facilitated by a couple of things. It all started with a reduction in the number of plastic bags. This helped to reduce significantly the number of plastic bags that were in the waste. The reduction of plastic bags was aimed at reducing the amount of solid waste by fifty percent, but they didn’t meet the target and only decreased the waste by twenty percent.

The city council of Austin did a calculation of the cost they incurred because of the plastic bags. The cost of processing plastic bags was approximated to be around$850000 per annum. The estimate did not include the cost that is usually incurred when they are cleaning out the gutters when they are blocked by the solid waste, the impact the plastic bags have on the environment and the wildlife.
